What was the highlight of Hotel Marqués de Riscal, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Elciego
Well worth a stop when travelling through Spain
The hotel is a piece of art and the sorrounding vineyards and winery are both beautiful and fascinating. The rooms we spacious with lovely varandas, the food was very good and the indoor pool, gym and spa facilities were also very spacious and well-equipped.
Sadly, the hotel is run by Marriott which brings with it the same issues that we have found at other locations. Of the course of a 5 night stay this led to a number of completely avoidable yet frustrating issues like several instances of people knocking on a door marked DND, uncoordinated cleaning and restocking teams, lack of response to customer requests and a generally poor setup. I mean, who still runs a ticket system for the WiFi? All TVs were an older generation but they were equipped with Chromecasts which should run Netflix, etc. but these Chromecasts, in turn, don't work when the bloody WiFi runs on a ticket system. If you stay for a longer period and don't speak Spanish, being forced to watch shows on your iPad does not for a 5* experience make. Sitting in the library for a couple of hours, we watched several staff member walk past the empty "complimentary drinks" cart but apparently nobody felt responsible to make sure somebody came to restock it. The list goes on but I don't want to be unfair to the staff, because it is 100% Mariott's fault for not implementing modern technology, solid, industry standard guidelines and ensuring staff is propely trained and retained.

A fabulous experience that we will never forget
This is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. The service was outstanding but not too 'over the top' The rooms were absolutely lovely with exceptional views. The breakfast was good but they changed from buffet style to table service while we were there and although the choice was still good, table service lead to huge wastage and made everything slower. Buffet breakfast is the much better option.The tour of the vineyard and winery was excellent and great fun!
Table service breakfast and we weren't blown away by the restaurant food for dinner but great in the bar for lunch

Very Good
The architecture. Good size room.
Impossible to open any window in the room (main building). Safety reason they said. The architect had designed a window to be opened but it has been locked. A bit overpriced.
